Job Description

AECOM is seeking a motivated and passionate Landscape Architecture Intern to join our dynamic team in Newark, NJ. This is an unparalleled opportunity for students or recent graduates eager to gain hands-on experience in both studio design and field-based project work. You will collaborate closely with experienced landscape architects, planners, and engineers on a diverse range of projects, contributing to sustainable and innovative solutions that shape communities and environments. We are looking for individuals with a strong desire to learn, a foundational understanding of landscape architecture principles, and excellent communication skills. This internship provides direct mentorship, practical application of academic knowledge, and exposure to the full project lifecycle within a leading global firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with site analysis and research, including gathering data, photographs, and existing conditions documentation.
  • Support the development of conceptual designs, master plans, and detailed drawings using CAD and graphic software.
  • Prepare presentation materials, renderings, and reports for client and stakeholder meetings.
  • Participate in site visits, field investigations, and construction observation activities.
  • Conduct plant material research and selection for various project types.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate landscape design with architectural and engineering solutions.
  • Organize and maintain project files, drawings, and digital assets.
  • Learn and adhere to company standards, best practices, and project deadlines.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a Bachelor's or Master's program in Landscape Architecture.
  • Basic proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
  • Strong graphic communication and freehand sketching abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated passion for sustainable design and environmental stewardship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with 3D modeling software (e.g., SketchUp, Rhino, Lumion).
  • Knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS).
  • Previous volunteer or extracurricular involvement related to landscape design or environmental initiatives.
  • Basic understanding of plant identification specific to the Northeast region.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to local project sites.
