Job Description
Are you passionate about marine life and eager to learn about animal care and training? The Coral Coast Marine Life Center offers an unparalleled opportunity for aspiring marine animal professionals to gain hands-on experience through our Marine Mammal Training Intern program. This internship is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience, providing comprehensive training and mentorship in foundational aspects of animal husbandry, behavioral enrichment, and public education programs. You will be an integral part of our animal care team, assisting experienced trainers in the daily care and positive reinforcement training of our marine mammals, contributing directly to their welfare and our educational mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting senior trainers during daily training sessions, observing and learning positive reinforcement techniques.
- Preparing diets and administering enrichment items for marine mammals according to strict protocols.
- Performing daily cleaning and maintenance of marine mammal habitats and associated areas.
- Maintaining accurate daily records of animal behavior, food intake, and enrichment activities.
- Assisting with educational presentations and guest interactions, sharing knowledge about marine life and conservation.
- Observing veterinary procedures and participating in facility operational tasks as needed.
- Following all safety guidelines and animal welfare policies diligently.
Required Skills
- A profound passion for marine life, conservation, and animal welfare.
- Ability to commit to the full duration of the internship program (typically 3-6 months).
- Excellent observation skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Physical stamina to perform duties that may include standing for long periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, and working in various weather conditions.
- Reliable transportation to our Coral Springs facility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Marine Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Previous volunteer experience at an aquarium, zoo, or animal rescue center.
- Basic understanding of animal behavior principles.
