Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform complex laboratory tests on patient samples (blood, tissue, urine, etc.) using established protocols.
  • Analyze test results, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and prompt reporting to medical staff.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment, performing quality control checks and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Adhere strictly to quality control, quality assurance, and laboratory safety protocols.
  • Prepare and process samples for analysis, ensuring proper handling and storage.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all tests performed, results obtained, and quality control data.
  • Communicate critical or abnormal findings to appropriate medical staff promptly and effectively.
  • Participate actively in continuous professional development, training, and competency assessments.
  • Comply with all relevant health and safety regulations, ethical guidelines, and laboratory accreditation standards.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, or a closely related scientific field.
  • HCPC registration (or eligibility for registration) as a Biomedical Scientist or Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Minimum of 2 years' post-qualification experience working in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in a range of laboratory techniques and operation of relevant instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage a varied workload.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Specialist experience in areas such as haematology, microbiology, clinical biochemistry, or immunology.
  • Demonstrable experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Previous experience working within the UK National Health Service (NHS) or a similar healthcare system.
