Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Metallurgy & Foundry Intern to join our team in Billings, Montana. This internship offers a unique opportunity for aspiring professionals to gain hands-on experience in the heavy industry sector, focusing on metallurgical processes, materials science, and foundry operations. You will work alongside experienced engineers and technicians, contributing to real-world projects, conducting research, and supporting daily production activities. This role is designed to provide comprehensive training and mentorship, building a strong foundation for a career in industrial metallurgy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist metallurgy engineers and foundry supervisors with daily operational tasks and special projects.
  • Conduct laboratory tests on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products, including mechanical testing, metallography, and chemical analysis.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze data related to material properties, process parameters, and quality control metrics.
  • Learn and strictly adhere to all company safety protocols and environmental regulations within a heavy industrial setting.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and problem-solving efforts related to material defects or process inefficiencies.
  • Document experimental procedures, observations, and results accurately and concisely.
  • Support the development and optimization of casting processes, heat treatments, and alloy compositions.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the foundry and metallurgy departments.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on project findings to the team and management.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited degree program in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Strong academic interest in heavy industry, metals, and manufacturing processes.
  • Basic understanding of scientific principles and the ability to follow detailed experimental procedures.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong observational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for data entry, analysis, and reporting.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to all company policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a laboratory or industrial setting (even non-metallurgy related) through academic projects or volunteer work.
  • Familiarity with CAD software or basic data analysis tools.
  • Demonstrated passion for learning and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
