Job Description
We are actively seeking a diligent and responsible Parking Enforcement Officer to join our Public Safety team in a vital council role. This position is central to ensuring compliance with parking regulations throughout the City of White Plains, which in turn facilitates smooth traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and fair access to public parking resources. The ideal candidate will possess a keen eye for detail, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to serving the public with professionalism. Comprehensive training will be provided to ensure full competency in all aspects of the role, including the use of electronic citation devices and navigation of city ordinances. A full uniform will be supplied.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned zones within the City of White Plains to monitor and enforce all local parking ordinances.
- Accurately identify and document parking violations, including but not limited to expired meters, illegal parking, and parking in restricted areas.
- Issue citations efficiently using a handheld electronic device, ensuring all information is correct and clearly recorded.
- Provide courteous and accurate information to the public regarding parking regulations, payment options, and general city inquiries.
- Report observed hazards, suspicious activities, or traffic impediments to dispatch or relevant city departments.
- Maintain meticulous daily records of patrol routes, citations issued, and any incidents encountered.
- Participate in court proceedings to provide testimony regarding citations when necessary.
- Conduct routine checks of parking meters and signage to ensure proper functionality and visibility.
- Collaborate with other public safety personnel to address parking-related issues and support broader community safety initiatives.
Required Skills
- Ability to understand and correctly apply complex parking laws and regulations.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail to identify violations.
- Effective verbal communication skills for interaction with the public and colleagues.
- Basic computer proficiency, particularly with handheld electronic devices for issuing citations.
- Possession of a valid New York State Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
- Physical stamina to walk and stand for extended periods, traverse various terrains, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and make sound judgments in the field.
- Commitment to public service and ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a law enforcement, security, or parking enforcement capacity.
- Familiarity with the geography and parking zones of White Plains, NY.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Experience with conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
