Job Description

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Public Relations Assistant to join our dynamic Government Media Team based in Mount Gambier. This entry-level role is ideal for someone passionate about public service and communication, eager to support media relations and community engagement efforts for regional development initiatives across South Australia. You will assist in the preparation of media materials, coordinate events, and help manage public inquiries, contributing directly to the department’s communication strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in drafting and distributing media releases, advisories, and other communication materials.
  • Monitor media coverage and prepare daily media summaries for the team.
  • Help coordinate media events, press conferences, and public engagement activities.
  • Maintain and update media contact databases and communication calendars.
  • Respond to public and media inquiries under supervision, directing to appropriate team members when necessary.
  • Support social media content creation and scheduling in line with departmental guidelines.
  • Assist with the preparation of internal communications and stakeholder reports.
  • Conduct research on relevant regional development topics and public sentiment.
  • Provide administrative support to the Government Media Team as required.

Required Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A diploma or degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.

  • Familiarity with the regional landscape and communities of South Australia.
  • Basic understanding of media monitoring tools and social media platforms.
