The City of Oakland Emergency Communications Department is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Public Safety Telecommunicators. As a Public Safety Telecommunicator, you will be the first point of contact for emergencies, dispatching police, fire, and medical units, and providing essential pre-arrival instructions. Key Responsibilities
- Answer incoming emergency (911) and non-emergency calls promptly and professionally.
- Gather critical information from callers, often during stressful situations, to assess the nature and location of incidents.
- Dispatch appropriate public safety resources (Police, Fire, EMS) based on established protocols.
- Provide clear and concise pre-arrival instructions to callers for medical emergencies, safety precautions, or other critical situations.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all calls and dispatched units using computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Monitor multiple radio frequencies and communication channels simultaneously.
- Communicate effectively with field units, other agencies, and the public.
- Remain calm, composed, and professional while working in a high-stress, dynamic environment.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to actively listen and quickly comprehend information.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and typing.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a customer service or call center environment.
- Familiarity with the geography and landmarks of Oakland.
- Bilingual proficiency, particularly in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin.
