Job Description
We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Remote Building Permit Processor to join our dedicated local government team. This is a 100% remote position, allowing you to contribute to the City of Rockford’s development from anywhere within the United States. In this vital role, you will be responsible for processing a variety of building permit applications, ensuring compliance with local codes, ordinances, and state regulations. You will serve as a key point of contact for contractors, developers, and residents, guiding them through the permitting process and facilitating smooth project progression. The ideal candidate will possess strong administrative skills, a keen eye for detail, and excellent communication abilities to manage a high volume of inquiries and documentation accurately and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Process, review, and track building permit applications for completeness and accuracy.
- Verify submitted plans and documentation against established checklists and requirements.
- Communicate effectively with applicants, contractors, and other city departments regarding application status, required modifications, and general permit inquiries.
- Maintain meticulous digital and physical records of all permit-related activities and correspondence.
- Ensure strict adherence to the City of Rockford's building codes, zoning ordinances, and applicable state regulations.
- Utilize permit tracking software (e.g., EnerGov, Accela) to manage the entire permit lifecycle.
- Generate reports on permit activity and status for departmental review.
- Assist in resolving permit-related issues and discrepancies.
- Stay updated on changes to building codes and permitting regulations.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in administrative support or data processing.
- Proven strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks in a remote environment.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations or procedural guidelines.
- Experience with document management and electronic filing systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Previous experience processing permits in a municipal or government setting.
- Familiarity with local building codes and zoning ordinances in Illinois.
- Experience with specific permit tracking software such as EnerGov or Accela.
