Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Respiratory Nurse to join our dedicated team at University Hospital Southampton. In this vital role, you will provide specialist nursing care to patients with a range of respiratory conditions, including asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, and other complex lung diseases. You will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive respiratory assessments and develop individualized care plans.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments, including oxygen therapy, nebulizers, and inhalers.
  • Monitor patient vital signs, respiratory function, and overall condition, escalating concerns as necessary.
  • Provide patient and family education on respiratory conditions, medication management, and self-care techniques.
  • Assist with diagnostic procedures such as spirometry and bronchodiloscopy.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborate with doctors, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of respiratory services through audit and research.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and professional nursing standards.

Required Skills

  • Registered Nurse (NMC PIN)
  • Minimum of 2 years post-registration experience in a medical or acute care setting.
  • Demonstrable experience or keen interest in respiratory care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in clinical assessment and care planning.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A post-registration qualification in respiratory nursing or a related specialty.
  • Experience with specialist respiratory equipment (e.g., non-invasive ventilation, tracheostomy care).
  • Experience in patient education programs for chronic respiratory conditions.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
