Job Description
We are actively seeking skilled, experienced, and highly reliable Snow Plow / Gritter Drivers to join our Public Works team for the upcoming winter season. This is a critical seasonal contract role focused on maintaining clear and safe roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, and various municipal properties across the City of Leduc. Successful candidates will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy snow removal equipment, including state-of-the-art snow plows and gritting trucks, often under adverse weather conditions and varying shift schedules. This position is vital to ensuring public safety, accessibility, and the continuous provision of essential services throughout the winter period.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate snow plow trucks, gritter trucks, and other related heavy equipment for snow removal and ice control operations on designated routes.
- Efficiently clear snow from roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, pathways, and other municipal areas according to established routes, priorities, and operational plans.
- Accurately apply sand, salt, and other de-icing materials using gritter equipment to prevent ice formation and improve traction.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, meticulously reporting any mechanical defects, maintenance needs, or safety concerns.
- Maintain accurate and detailed logs of activities performed, routes covered, materials used, and hours worked.
- Be available and responsive to emergency call-outs for snow and ice events, which may require working extended, irregular, and overnight hours, as well as weekends and holidays.
- Adhere strictly to all provincial traffic laws, municipal safety regulations, and City of Leduc operational procedures and policies.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, dispatchers, and fellow team members regarding operational status, route conditions, and potential hazards.
- Perform minor equipment adjustments and routine cleaning to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the fleet.
Required Skills
- Valid Class 3 or higher driver's license with a Q (air brake) endorsement, valid in the province of Alberta.
- A clean driver's abstract, demonstrating a responsible driving record (no more than 3 demerit points).
- Proven practical experience in operating heavy commercial vehicles or specialized snow removal equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts during severe weather conditions.
- Strong commitment to safety, including strict adherence to all traffic laws, safety protocols, and operational regulations.
- Physical ability to perform manual tasks associated with snow removal, which may include lifting, bending, shoveling, and standing for extended periods in cold conditions.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, for reporting and teamwork.
- Ability to navigate and operate equipment safely under challenging winter weather conditions (e.g., low visibility, icy roads).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous professional experience as a snow plow or gritter operator in a municipal or commercial setting.
- Comprehensive familiarity with Leduc roadways, geographic areas, and municipal infrastructure.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude for basic equipment troubleshooting and preventative maintenance.
- Possession of current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with GPS or routing software in an operational context.
