Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Stagehand to join our production team at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals with a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and an interest in the performing arts. As a Stagehand, you will be instrumental in the physical setup and breakdown of sets, props, and equipment for various productions, ensuring smooth transitions and supporting the technical needs of our shows. Full training will be provided to help you develop the necessary skills in a professional theatre environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the loading, unloading, and movement of scenery, props, and equipment.
  • Participate in the setup and strike of stage productions, including building and dismantling sets.
  • Operate stage machinery, flying systems, and theatrical equipment under supervision.
  • Support lighting and sound technicians with equipment setup and cabling.
  • Maintain a safe and organized backstage environment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on stage equipment as directed.
  • Work collaboratively with the technical team, stage management, and other departments.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and theatre policies.

Required Skills

  • Strong physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 25kg) and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively as part of a team.
  • A keen interest in theatre and live performance.
  • Reliable, punctual, and a positive attitude.
  • Basic understanding of tools and safety procedures (training provided).
  • Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a theatre, event, or construction setting (even informal).
  • Basic knowledge of woodworking or metalworking.
  • Awareness of health and safety best practices in a backstage environment.
  • A valid driver's license.
