Job Description

Are you passionate about the natural world and eager to learn the foundational skills of specimen preparation and museum display? Indian Creek Nature Center is offering an exciting entry-level internship for a Taxidermy & Museum Preparation Intern. This hands-on role provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the ethical and scientific preparation of specimens for educational exhibits, contributing directly to our mission of inspiring appreciation and understanding of nature. No prior experience in taxidermy is required; full training will be provided by our experienced staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and preservation of biological specimens (e.g., birds, mammals, insects) under direct supervision, following ethical and safety protocols.
  • Learn and apply basic taxidermy techniques, including skinning, cleaning, and mounting procedures for educational displays.
  • Aid in the maintenance and inventory of the Nature Center's specimen collection and related equipment.
  • Participate in the creation, installation, and upkeep of educational exhibits, ensuring accuracy and engagement.
  • Document specimen data, collection information, and preparation methods meticulously.
  • Assist with general laboratory and workshop organization, ensuring a clean and safe working environment.
  • Support other Nature Center educational or conservation initiatives as needed.

Required Skills

  • A strong passion for natural history, wildlife, and environmental conservation.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
  • Ability to work meticulously and patiently on delicate tasks.
  • Comfort working with biological specimens in various states.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, Museum Studies, Art, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with scientific terminology and basic ecological concepts.
  • Experience with artistic or craft-based projects requiring fine motor skills.
