Job Description
Join The National Trust team as a Seasonal Apiary Assistant in Bath, Somerset! This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals passionate about nature, conservation, and learning the craft of beekeeping. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to assist with the seasonal care of our bee colonies and honey production at one of our beautiful estates. No prior beekeeping experience is necessary as full training will be provided, and all essential beekeeping gear will be supplied. You’ll be working outdoors, contributing directly to our environmental conservation goals and the local ecosystem. This temporary role is perfect for those seeking hands-on experience and a unique outdoor work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with routine hive inspections, checking bee health and colony strength.
- Support honey extraction and processing under supervision.
- Help with the maintenance and cleaning of apiary equipment and sites.
- Participate in swarm management and colony division as required.
- Monitor for pests and diseases, reporting findings to the lead beekeeper.
- Ensure the cleanliness and organisation of the honey processing area.
- Adhere to all health and safety guidelines for beekeeping operations.
Required Skills
- Strong willingness to learn and follow instructions.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and carrying moderate weights (e.g., hive bodies).
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Excellent attention to detail and observational skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a small team.
- A genuine interest in nature, conservation, and insect life.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic understanding of bee life cycles or ecology.
- Previous experience in outdoor or agricultural work.
- Full UK driving license to potentially assist with travel to various apiary sites.
