Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and respectful Cemetery Groundsman to join our team in Portland, OR. This is an ongoing, full-time, on-site role crucial to maintaining the serene and beautiful environment of Serene Rest Memorial Parks. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of groundskeeping duties, ensuring that our memorial park remains a place of peace, dignity, and beauty for all visitors. This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a compassionate approach to working within a sacred space. Full training will be provided, but a willingness to learn and work outdoors in various weather conditions is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, and weeding.
- Assist with the preparation and closing of interment sites, following strict safety and procedural guidelines.
- Operate and maintain various groundskeeping equipment safely and efficiently.
- Participate in seasonal planting, watering, and care of flowers, shrubs, and trees.
- Ensure paths, roads, and common areas are clean, free of debris, and well-maintained.
- Assist with snow removal and de-icing during winter months, as needed.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order, performing minor repairs as necessary.
- Interact with families and visitors in a respectful, compassionate, and professional manner.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
Required Skills
- Physical ability to perform manual labor, lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Basic understanding of groundskeeping techniques or a strong willingness to learn.
- Ability to operate basic power tools and lawn care equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers) or quick learner.
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable transportation to and from the job site.
- Demonstrated respect and sensitivity when working in a memorial park environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or a similar manual labor role (6+ months).
- Experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., small tractor, backhoe) is a plus but not required.
- Familiarity with horticultural practices.
- Valid Oregon driver's license.
