Job Description
Are you passionate about the outdoors and eager to start a meaningful career in environmental conservation? The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Trainee Forestry Technicians. This entry-level position offers comprehensive on-the-job training in various aspects of forestry management, national parks support, and environmental conservation. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning essential skills for managing forests, protecting wildlife habitats, and maintaining recreational areas. No prior experience is required; we are looking for dedicated individuals with a strong work ethic and a desire to learn and grow in an outdoor career.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in guided field surveys to collect data on forest health, tree species, and wildlife.
- Assist in the implementation of forest management plans, including planting, thinning, and invasive species removal.
- Learn to operate and maintain various tools and equipment used in forestry operations, under supervision.
- Support trail maintenance, signage installation, and other infrastructure projects within state parks and forested areas.
- Aid in emergency response efforts such as wildfire prevention and suppression, as needed.
- Contribute to public education and outreach initiatives regarding environmental conservation.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Document fieldwork, observations, and data in an organized manner.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Strong interest in environmental conservation, forestry, and outdoor work.
- Ability to work effectively in various outdoor conditions and terrains.
- Physical stamina to perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, and walking long distances.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks and techniques.
- Valid New York State driver's license or ability to obtain one.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of local flora and fauna.
- Experience with outdoor recreation (hiking, camping, etc.).
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Enrollment or completion of coursework in environmental science, forestry, or a related field.
