Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Recreational Therapy Intern to join our dynamic team. This internship offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a rehabilitation setting, working alongside certified recreational therapists. You will assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating therapeutic recreation programs designed to improve patients’ physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being. This is an excellent role for students or recent graduates looking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical, impactful way, with a strong focus on learning and professional development.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Certified Recreational Therapists (CTRs) in conducting initial assessments and developing individualized treatment plans for patients.
- Support the facilitation of a variety of therapeutic recreation activities, including adaptive sports, creative arts, community outings, and leisure education.
- Observe and learn techniques for motivating patients, adapting activities, and documenting progress.
- Help maintain a safe and engaging therapeutic environment, including setting up and cleaning activity areas and equipment.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to contribute to patient care planning and learn about holistic rehabilitation.
- Engage with patients to build rapport, encourage participation, and provide support.
- Complete administrative tasks as needed, including scheduling and record-keeping.
- Adhere to all facility policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Recreational Therapy, Kinesiology, Health Sciences, or related program.
- Demonstrated passion for recreational therapy and patient well-being.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Empathy, patience, and a positive attitude.
- Basic understanding of therapeutic recreation principles and practices.
- Willingness to learn and take initiative.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or observational experience in a healthcare or recreational setting.
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with adaptive equipment or techniques.
- Familiarity with documentation systems in a healthcare environment.
