Job Description

Davey Tree Expert Company is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team in Portage la Prairie as a City Arborist Assistant / Tree Surgeon Trainee. This entry-level position is perfect for those with no prior experience in arboriculture, as we provide comprehensive, hands-on training to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning the art and science of tree care, contributing to urban forestry initiatives, and ensuring the health and safety of trees in our community. Key Responsibilities
- Assist certified arborists and crew leaders with various tree care operations, including pruning, removal, and planting.
- Learn to safely operate and maintain equipment such as chippers, chainsaws, and other tools under direct supervision.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and procedures, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Perform ground-based tasks, including brush removal, clean-up, and assisting with rigging operations.
- Participate actively in ongoing training sessions and professional development programs.
- Support aerial operations by providing ground assistance and maintaining a safe work zone.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment at job sites and in company vehicles.
- Develop foundational knowledge of tree biology, identification, and common tree diseases/pests.
Required Skills
- Eagerness and willingness to learn and grow within the arboriculture industry.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong commitment to safety and adherence to all safety guidelines.
- A valid G Driver's License (or equivalent) with a clean driving record, or willingness to obtain one.
- Excellent work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- No prior experience required – comprehensive training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Previous experience in outdoor labor, landscaping, or construction is a plus (but not required).
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification (will be provided as part of training if not already held).
