Job Description
Are you eager to launch a career in an essential and growing industry? Waste Management Inc. is seeking motivated individuals for the role of Compost Facility Operator at our state-of-the-art facility in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This is an incredible opportunity for those with no prior experience in heavy machinery operation, as comprehensive training will be provided. You will play a vital role in our environmental sustainability efforts by managing the daily operations of our composting facility, learning to operate heavy equipment, and ensuring efficient and safe processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Actively participate in and complete all provided heavy machinery operation and safety training programs.
- Learn to safely and efficiently operate various types of heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, excavators, and screeners, under supervision.
- Monitor and manage compost piles, turning schedules, and aeration systems to optimize the composting process and meet quality standards.
- Assist with routine facility maintenance, including cleaning equipment and work areas to maintain a safe and organized environment.
- Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment and report any mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly.
- Strictly adhere to all company safety protocols, environmental regulations, and operational procedures.
- Maintain accurate daily logs of activities, material movements, and process parameters.
- Work collaboratively with team members to achieve daily operational goals and ensure continuous improvement.
Required Skills
- Strong willingness and ability to learn new skills and adapt to dynamic work environments.
- Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Keen attention to detail and a commitment to safe work practices.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic mechanical aptitude or interest in how machinery works.
- Previous experience working outdoors or in an industrial setting (not required for heavy machinery, but general industrial experience can be beneficial).
- An interest in environmental sustainability, waste reduction, or recycling.
