Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Specialized Heavy Haul Escort Driver, also known as a Pilot Car Driver, to join our expanding logistics team based in Belfast’s vibrant Titanic Quarter. This critical role involves safely escorting oversized and overweight loads across designated routes, ensuring compliance with all local, national, and company regulations. You will be responsible for providing expert guidance and traffic control, acting as the frontline safety representative for our specialized transport operations. This position requires extensive travel throughout the UK and Ireland, with all travel-related expenses fully covered.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate pilot vehicles (escort cars/trucks) safely and efficiently to guide oversized and overweight loads.
• Communicate effectively with heavy haul truck drivers, local authorities, and other team members using two-way radios and other communication tools.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of pilot vehicles and equipment, ensuring everything is in excellent working condition.
• Manage traffic control, including flagging, setting up temporary signage, and coordinating with law enforcement when necessary.
• Ensure strict adherence to all state and federal regulations regarding heavy haul movements, including permit requirements and route surveys.
• Maintain detailed logbooks and documentation of all trips, incidents, and equipment checks.
• Adapt to changing road conditions, weather, and unexpected obstacles to ensure the safe passage of loads.
• Represent the company professionally and courteously to the public and regulatory officials.

Required Skills

• Valid Class C (or equivalent) Driver's License with a clean driving record.
• Proven experience in heavy haul escorting or similar logistical support roles (minimum 3 years).
• Excellent knowledge of traffic laws and regulations pertaining to oversized loads in the UK and Ireland.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey instructions clearly and calmly.
• Ability to read maps, navigate routes effectively, and proficiently use GPS technology.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety protocols and procedures in a demanding environment.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and travel extensively as required by project schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification as a Pilot Car Operator or Escort Driver from a recognized training program.
• Previous experience with specialized flagging and traffic control equipment.
• Basic mechanical aptitude for minor vehicle troubleshooting and maintenance.
• Familiarity with UK and Irish road networks and specific regional regulations related to heavy haul.
