Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and responsible Special Needs Transport Assistant to join our team in Dallas, Texas. This role involves assisting passengers with special needs, including children and adults, during transportation to and from various locations such as schools, medical appointments, and day programs. The position operates on split shifts, making it an ideal opportunity for parents or individuals seeking a flexible schedule that allows for personal commitments during the midday. Your primary focus will be ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of all passengers, providing a supportive and caring environment throughout their journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely assist passengers with boarding and alighting vehicles, including those using wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
- Secure all passengers and their equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, car seats) according to safety protocols.
- Monitor passenger behavior and needs during transit, addressing any concerns promptly and appropriately.
- Communicate effectively with passengers, parents/guardians, and program staff.
- Maintain a clean and organized vehicle interior.
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and accurate daily logs.
- Adhere to all company policies, safety regulations, and relevant traffic laws.
- Provide basic first aid or emergency assistance if required (training provided).
- Assist drivers with route navigation and scheduling as needed.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with individuals with special needs or in a caregiving role.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a patient and empathetic demeanor.
- Ability to assist passengers with mobility challenges, including lifting and securing equipment.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (for potential future driving opportunities).
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
- Flexibility to work split shifts (e.g., morning and afternoon routes with a break in between).
Preferred Qualifications
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Experience in a professional transport or logistics environment.
- Knowledge of local Dallas area roads and traffic patterns.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish).
