Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Council Labourer to join our Parks team. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, are physically active, and want to contribute to the beautification and maintenance of Portland’s urban green spaces. As a Council Labourer, you will perform a variety of manual tasks essential to the upkeep of our parks, trails, and recreational facilities. This entry-level position requires no prior experience; we are committed to providing full training to ensure your success. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general grounds maintenance, including mowing, weeding, planting, and litter removal.
  • Operate and maintain basic hand tools and small power equipment (e.g., weed eaters, leaf blowers) under supervision.
  • Assist with pruning trees, shrubs, and hedges to maintain park aesthetics and safety.
  • Support skilled trades staff (e.g., landscapers, park rangers) with various projects as needed.
  • Help with the installation and repair of park amenities such as benches, signs, and fencing.
  • Ensure parks and facilities are clean, safe, and welcoming for public use.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety policies and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist with the setup and teardown for park events and activities.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Reliability and a strong work ethic, with a commitment to showing up on time for shifts.
  • Basic communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn and operate various hand tools and small equipment safely.
  • A valid Oregon Driver's License or ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe.
  • Commitment to public service and maintaining high standards for park cleanliness and safety.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience (even informal) with gardening, landscaping, or outdoor manual labor.
  • Familiarity with basic safety practices in an outdoor work environment.
  • Experience operating small engine equipment.
