Veolia UK is seeking a committed Gritter Driver to join our team in Portsmouth. In this essential role, you will be responsible for operating specialized gritting vehicles to spread salt and grit on roads, ensuring they remain safe and accessible for the public during frosty, icy, and snowy weather. This is a crucial position requiring a flexible approach to working hours, often involving night shifts and on-call duties during the winter season. If you hold an HGV Class 2 licence and are passionate about public safety, we encourage you to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate gritting vehicles to spread salt and grit on designated routes across Portsmouth.
- Conduct pre-shift vehicle checks and ensure all equipment is in good working order.
- Load grit/salt into the gritting vehicle, adhering to safety protocols.
- Monitor weather conditions and respond promptly to call-outs for gritting operations.
- Accurately record work completed, including routes, times, and materials used.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and company policies.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding operational status and any issues.
- Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of the gritting vehicle.
- Represent Veolia UK professionally while interacting with the public.
Required Skills
- Valid UK HGV Class 2 (or C) driving licence.
- Driver CPC qualification.
- Digital Tachograph card.
- A flexible approach to working hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call duties during the winter gritting season.
- Excellent understanding and adherence to road safety regulations.
- Strong commitment to health and safety.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience operating gritting or winter maintenance vehicles.
- Local knowledge of Portsmouth and surrounding road networks.
- Experience with GPS or route optimization systems.
