Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Journalist to join our award-winning editorial team in Colchester. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to local news coverage, breaking stories that matter to our readers and holding power to account. The successful candidate will be passionate about community journalism, possess excellent writing and investigative skills, and be adept at working across multiple platforms, including print and digital.
Key Responsibilities
- Researching, investigating, and writing accurate, engaging, and balanced news stories for both print and online platforms.
- Conducting interviews with a diverse range of sources, including community members, officials, and experts.
- Developing and maintaining strong contacts within the local community to generate exclusive news leads.
- Attending press conferences, court hearings, council meetings, and other local events as required.
- Breaking exclusive news stories and generating compelling features and analyses.
- Taking high-quality photographs and capturing video footage for multimedia content.
- Utilising social media platforms to promote content and engage with our audience.
- Adhering to strict deadlines and upholding the highest standards of journalistic ethics and accuracy.
- Collaborating effectively with editors, photographers, and other team members.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Journalist or Reporter, preferably within local news.
- Excellent writing, grammar, and storytelling abilities.
- Strong news judgment and an understanding of what makes a compelling story.
- Proficiency in conducting interviews and building rapport with sources.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with media law and journalistic ethics.
- Strong social media skills for content promotion and audience engagement.
- Full UK driving license and access to a car for travel within the coverage area.
Preferred Qualifications
- NCTJ qualification or equivalent professional journalism qualification.
- Experience with content management systems (CMS) and digital publishing tools.
- Proficiency in photography and basic video editing.
- A degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field.
