Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Oceanography & Deep Sea Exploration Intern to join our dynamic environmental services team in Trail, British Columbia. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in marine science research, data collection, and analysis. You will support senior scientists and project managers on various environmental assessment projects, potentially involving fresh water systems that feed into larger marine environments, or remote deep-sea exploration initiatives through data analysis and literature review. This is an entry-level position designed for students or recent graduates eager to kickstart their career in oceanography and environmental consulting. Full training and mentorship will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with literature reviews and background research on marine ecosystems and deep-sea environments.
- Support data collection efforts, which may include field preparation, sample logging, and laboratory analysis.
- Contribute to the processing and interpretation of oceanographic data, including physical, chemical, and biological parameters.
- Prepare preliminary drafts of technical reports, presentations, and scientific publications.
- Operate and maintain specialized scientific equipment under supervision.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to project planning and strategy discussions.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations.
Required Skills
- Strong passion for oceanography, marine biology, or environmental science.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- High attention to detail and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Oceanography, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
- Prior experience with scientific data collection or laboratory procedures (academic projects welcome).
- Familiarity with statistical software or programming languages (e.g., R, Python) for data analysis.
- Diving certification (e.g., PADI, NAUI) is a plus, but not required.
