Job Description
Join the dedicated Public Works team of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality as a Pothole Repair Crew Member. In this essential role, you will be responsible for the timely and effective repair of potholes across our municipal road network, contributing directly to the safety and longevity of our community’s infrastructure. This position requires physical stamina, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively outdoors in varying weather conditions. You will operate specialized equipment and work collaboratively with fellow crew members to ensure high-quality road repairs are completed efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate light and heavy equipment safely and efficiently for road repair, including asphalt cutters, vibratory rollers, and hand tools.
- Prepare damaged road surfaces, including cleaning and leveling, before applying repair materials.
- Apply asphalt and other patching materials to fill potholes and other road defects according to established procedures.
- Ensure proper compaction and finishing of repaired areas to prevent future damage.
- Conduct routine maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, traffic management plans, and occupational health and safety regulations.
- Assist with other general road maintenance tasks as directed, including signage placement and debris removal.
- Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors regarding job progress and any issues encountered.
Required Skills
- Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
- Basic knowledge of construction safety practices and procedures.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in an outdoor environment.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in road construction, landscaping, general labour, or a similar outdoor physical role.
- Experience operating light construction equipment (e.g., skid steer, vibratory plate compactor).
- Possession of a First Aid and CPR certification.
- Knowledge of municipal road repair standards.
