Job Description
Are you passionate about helping others and eager to start a career in public health? The Grand Forks County Public Health Department is seeking a motivated and compassionate individual to join our team as a Trainee Addiction Counselor. This entry-level position is perfect for someone with little to no prior experience in counseling, as we provide comprehensive training and mentorship. You will work under the direct supervision of experienced addiction counselors and licensed professionals, learning to provide essential support and guidance to individuals and families affected by substance use disorders. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to community health initiatives, develop critical counseling skills, and grow within a supportive public health environment. Full training on assessment, counseling techniques, case management, and resource navigation will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in structured training programs and workshops on addiction counseling, public health practices, and relevant regulations.
- Shadow and assist experienced addiction counselors in conducting client assessments and developing individualized treatment plans.
- Learn to facilitate group and individual counseling sessions under direct supervision.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records in accordance with departmental and ethical guidelines.
- Assist clients in navigating community resources and support systems.
- Participate in team meetings and case conferences to discuss client progress and treatment strategies.
- Adhere to all ethical and professional standards of practice in addiction counseling.
- Engage in continuous learning and professional development as required for certification.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED required (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred for career progression).
- Strong empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to help individuals struggling with addiction.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and take direction from supervisors.
- Patience, resilience, and a non-judgmental approach.
- Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and data entry.
- Willingness to learn and commit to a comprehensive training program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some college coursework in psychology, social work, public health, or a related human services field.
- Volunteer experience in a helping profession or community service.
- Familiarity with local community resources in Grand Forks County.
- Ability to speak a second language prevalent in the community.
