Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Observational Astronomy Intern to join our team at the Royal London Observatory. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in observational astronomy, working alongside experienced researchers and astronomers. You will be introduced to the day-to-day operations of an active observatory, learn about various astronomical instruments, and contribute to ongoing research projects. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates with a passion for space and a desire to kickstart their career in astrophysics. Full training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior astronomers with telescope setup, calibration, and operation for nightly observations.
  • Participate in the collection and basic processing of astronomical data.
  • Support research projects by performing literature reviews and organizing data files.
  • Learn to use specialized astronomical software for data visualization and preliminary analysis.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of observatory equipment and facilities.
  • Attend team meetings and seminars to deepen understanding of current research topics.
  • Document procedures and observations accurately and systematically.
  • Collaborate with fellow interns and staff on various scientific tasks.
