Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Bookbinder to join our dedicated team in Hobart. This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced artisan to contribute to a studio renowned for its traditional craft. The successful candidate will be proficient in a wide range of hand-binding techniques, possessing an acute eye for detail and a deep respect for the history and artistry of bookbinding. You will work on diverse projects, from the intricate repair of historical texts to the creation of new, custom-bound volumes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform complex book repairs and restorations, including re-backing, re-covering, and page repair, adhering to conservation best practices.
  • Execute various traditional binding styles such as full leather, half leather, quarter cloth, and case binding.
  • Prepare materials, including cutting and preparing boards, paper, and leather, and creating custom tools as needed.
  • Conduct careful collation and sewing of book blocks, utilizing various sewing styles appropriate for the text.
  • Apply decorative finishes, including gilding, blind tooling, and titling, with precision and artistic flair.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, ensuring proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Collaborate with clients and other team members on project specifications, timelines, and material selections.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of junior staff or apprentices, sharing expertise and best practices.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in traditional hand bookbinding.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in various binding techniques including full leather, half leather, and case binding.
  • Expertise in book restoration, including paper repair, re-backing, and re-covering.
  • Strong understanding of historical book structures and materials.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a high degree of manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small, focused team.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and adaptability to unique project challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal qualification or apprenticeship in bookbinding, conservation, or a related craft.
  • Experience with letterpress printing or other related printmaking techniques.
  • Portfolio showcasing a range of traditional binding and restoration work.
  • Knowledge of various decorative finishing techniques, including gold tooling and marbling.
  • Experience in client consultation and project management within a craft-based business.
