Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Reptile / Exotic Pet Breeder Assistant to join our specialized animal care team. This role is crucial to the daily operations of our breeding and care facility, focusing on the well-being and successful propagation of various exotic species. The ideal candidate will possess a foundational understanding of animal care principles, a strong work ethic, and a genuine passion for reptiles, amphibians, and other unique pets. You will work closely with senior breeders and animal care specialists, contributing to feeding, cleaning, monitoring, and husbandry tasks that ensure the health and thriving of our diverse collection. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily feeding routines for a wide array of exotic reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, ensuring appropriate diets and portion sizes.
- Conduct thorough cleaning and sanitation of enclosures, habitats, and breeding facilities to maintain hygienic environments.
- Monitor animal health and behavior, promptly reporting any anomalies, signs of illness, or stress to senior staff.
- Assist with breeding protocols, including egg collection, incubation setup, and care for hatchlings/juveniles.
- Handle animals safely and humanely for health checks, transfers, and enrichment activities.
- Maintain accurate records of feeding, breeding activities, growth, health observations, and environmental parameters.
- Prepare and maintain necessary supplies, including live and frozen food, substrates, and cleaning agents.
- Support the veterinary team during routine examinations or medical interventions as needed.
- Contribute to habitat design and enrichment to promote natural behaviors and well-being.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in animal care, preferably with some exposure to reptiles or exotic pets.
- Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols precisely.
- Excellent observational skills for monitoring animal health and behavior.
- Strong commitment to cleanliness and sanitation practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good physical stamina and ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associates or Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, or a related field.
- Previous experience specifically with reptile or amphibian breeding.
- Familiarity with various exotic animal diets and nutritional requirements.
- Knowledge of common reptile and amphibian diseases and preventative care.
- Certification in animal first aid or CPR.
